What the Soul Kept | 36 x 36
 
There are about eight layers of history beneath the surface of What the Soul Kept—paint, paper, collage, graphite, scratches, veils, erasures, and a tremendous amount of texture. Some of those layers are visible. Others are almost completely buried.
I wanted the painting to feel lived-in rather than polished. The raw graphite line became the interruption—the mark that refuses to behave or disappear.
Sometimes what is most important in a painting is not what we can clearly see, but what we sense is still underneath.
